1.Characteristics of anatomy
-apex (two stroke meet at the top/ consist of 5 type such as flat,round,pointed,hallowed and extended. for alphabet A)
-X-height-(use to measure meanline and baseline)
-roman and italic (italic are slanting or tilting to the right)
-arm (horizontal or diagonal upward like T and E)
-leg (the lower diagonal stroke of letter K and R)
-bowl (the general round or elliptical form  of letters such as uppercase of C,G,O and lowercase of b,c,e,p. consist of two type      that is open and closed.
-counter (white space enclosed by a letter, whether wholly enclosed as in d or o or partially as in c and m
-crotch (used for the interiorspace created at the merging point such as K,M,N,V,W,X,Y,Z
2.The important of anatomy in typography
-make people able to clearly communicate complex messages effectively with limited means.

Project 3: Postcard

After completing this topic, students have to produce one exhibition postcard entitled ‘Anatomy of Typography’ . It must be based on the full typography characteristics.

  1. Assignment: Produce a postcard using typography characteristics.
    • Technique: Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop
    • Size: A6 10.44cm x 14.82 cm postcard size portrait or landscape
    • Duration: 2 weeks
    • Print: Black and white
  2. The objective of this postcard is to promote the exhibition. In this project you are allowed to use greyscale like blackcolour, grey and white. Only typefaces are allowed to be used in the postcard. Students are not allowed to use images or picture. This are the information should included in a a postcard
    • Exhibition Title : Anatomy of Typography
    • Place: Putra World Trade Centre
    • Date: December 1, 2025
    • Time: 8 a.m – 8 p.m

  3. As usual before working the computer, you are asked to produce 10 thumbnail sketches for the postcard design.
  4. Then choose one for a comprehensive sketch.
  5. Comprehensive sketches must have the image of the postcard that is going to be produced.
  6. You must count the essential concepts that will be used for the postcard entitled: Anatomy of Typography.
  7. Try to use the terms or concepts that you have learned in this chapter.
  8. The parts of the typefaces that have been explained in this chapter can be used as a concept in the design of your postcard.
  9. You may start doing your work in the computer after you have finished the comprehensive sketches.
  10. Comprehensive sketches are prerequisite for a computer-generated design.
